Metal Fibers

The term Metal Fibers refers to a family of products produced by the careful shaving of wire into a mass of strands resembling "wool". Metal wool shaved from plain steel wire is called steel wool, wool shaved from bronze wire is bronze wool, and so on. By varying the shaving process, the size or thickness of the individual strands can be varied. This allows for the separation of metal wool products by fiber thickness into categories called "grades".

BENEFITS:
Metal wools possess several important properties that make them suitable for use in a wide range of different applications.
• Gentle Abrasiveness - The wire shaving process produces fibers that have geometric cross sections. The result is that each metal wool fiber has several long, sharp cutting edges. Unlike sandpaper and other grit-based abrasives that scratch away material with sharp points, metal wool fibers perform like thousands of microscopic scrapers or planes on a surface. The result is a smoother surface after sanding and a better result after finishing. Fine metal wools are even used to clean glass and polish fine wood articles.
• High Aspect Ratio - The shaving of wire into metal wool is an economical method to produce fine metal fibers. Metal fibers have several chemical and physical properties that make them ideal for many applications including thermal management, chemical reactions, electrochemistry, and composite reinforcement. This property also allows the use of metal wools in textile processes.
• Design Flexibility - Metal wool can be efficiently manufactured into many forms that allow easy integration into final applications. From chopping into lower aspect ratio fibers for friction materials to forming textile-like metal fiber fabrics, metal wool is the material of choice for many OEM applications.

MATERIALS:
Metal wool is currently available in low carbon steel, AISI 434 stainless steel, copper, bronze, brass and aluminum. Addition of 304/316 stainless steel, nickel & nickel alloys, and other exotic metals is planned. Virtually any metal that can be drawn into wire can be shaved into metal wool.

FIBER SIZES:
The fiber widths of the eight grades of steel wool range between 25 and 125 microns. The same fiber sizes are available in most other materials, although some exceptions apply. Please refer to available individual metal wool specifications for exact fiber sizes and tolerances.

FORMAT:
Metal wool is available in a wide assortment of formats, from simple pads to complex shapes and forms. Common formats are 4" wide continuous rovings wound on reels, batt or sheets of needle punched wool on rolls up to 105" wide and continuous length, die cut shapes such as disks and pads, or any number of custom formats.
The potential uses for Metal Wools are limited only by the imagination of the user. We welcome requests for materials that may lie outside the listed parameters. The following is a partial list of feasible applications: -abrasives -airbag inflator filters -mufflers & sound attenuators -thermal management -composites -friction materials -filtration -electrodes -laminates -silver recovery -emi/rfi shielding -conductive fabrics -NVH isolation -structural elements -heat resistant resilient layers -METRIX™ metal textiles
