Hot Gas Filtration

Coal combustion byproducts are a complex mixture of solids, vapors and gasses, many of which are environmentally harmful. Capturing, separating or treating these effluents has become the single largest challenge to coal-fired boiler operators in recent decades. For particulate matter, the standard treatments have been electrostatic precipitation or bag house filters. This particulate removal has always occurred on effluent that has been cooled through several prior stages. GMT innovation now makes hot-side filtration possible.

Now GMT has combined the filtration properties of non-woven bag house media with the temperature capacity of stainless steel fibers to create the world’s first hot gas bag house filters. Removal of particulates as the first step after combustion is now possible, allowing for downstream processing to occur with little or no solids component in the flue gases.

With clean flue gasses exiting the filter stage above 850°F, SCR efficiency is maintained but the SCR does not foul, blind off or get “poisoned” by ash. Clean SCR’s perform better, last longer and can generally be sized smaller than systems designed to handle dirty gasses.

GMT’s high temperature filter media and filters are part of a large family of filtration and separation products. Source fibers are available in stainless steel and many nonferrous alloys, in sizes from 2 microns to 100 microns. We offer gas/solid filters rated at 99.95% capture at PM2.5 and liquid filters from 5 microns to 100 microns or more. GMT media are being evaluated by many industries due to their high temperature resistance and excellent filtration properties combined in one versatile and economical format.
