Abrasives  GMT, Inc. is one of the world's premier suppliers of metal fiber products, including steel wool abrasives, automotive materials, and industrial products. Since our founding as American Steel Wool in 1896, GMT has been committed to serving the abrasives market with the highest quality steel wool available. Recent innovations in metal textile manufacturing processes have resulted in several new products never before available. These products include composite steel wool pads capable of higher RPM buffing and polishing, and laminated steel wool sheets compatible with power hand tools. Metal Wool Reels and Pads In its basic form, metal wool is comprised of continuous strands of fiber massed together in a web or roving. This product is available in bulk reels, and pads, familiar to most people as what is sold in hardware stores, etc. Metrix™ Brand Metal Textiles By building up layers of wool and needle punching them together, larger and stronger structures can be produced. These needle punched textiles can be die cut into wheels, pads, and other useful shapes for use on power polishing and finishing equipment, such as rotary buffing machines. Metrix™ Laminated Abrasives GMT developed and patented a process by which a layer of steel wool abrasive medium is laminated to a synthetic backing. This reinforced abrasive sheet is a versatile innovation that allows steel wool to be used more conveniently by hand, or on power sanding equipment such as random orbital, detail, and palm sanders. Hook-and-loop and peel-and-stick attachments are also available, and the material may be die cut to fit any format or sold in master rolls for customer processing. (U.S. Patent No. 5,972,814) CMX™ Brand Composite Abrasives For applications with high mechanical stress such as stone and wood floor polishing, crystallizing, high RPM rotary polishing, and others, a reinforced steel wool pad is required. GMT has developed a patent-pending process incorporating metal and synthetic fibers in a composite textile. The resulting product is remarkably strong, yet retains the preferred abrasive properties of steel wool, unlike synthetic non-woven abrasive pads that are grit-based and prone to scratching of fine surfaces.
